Absolutely gorgeous sounding acoustic set, very good quality for the electric sets. Heaven Help the Fool, Althea, Jack Straw, Scarlet>Fire are highlights.

Superb first set. Playin>Crazy Fingers>M&MU>Big River opener. River is smoking. An all time great version of Looks Like Rain as well. Crispy sound.

Sugaree! Plus great versions of Big River, LL>Supp, Big RR Blues and a killer Samson.

Also a superb 1st set here. Best Duprees imo. Nasty Scarlet> Fire to launch the 2nd.

For great matrices, seek out great auds.

I like the ones from 8/5 and 8/6/71, for example.

Another dusborne masterpiece:

https://archive.org/details/gd1970-06-04.123799.mtx.olsen.droncit.dusborne.flac16

My AUD supplies the intro, first song ("Monkey and the Engineer" and missing "Swing Low" Acoustic SBD chunk.

The Electric SBD supplies Pig's thank you at the end of "Midnight Hour", plus the start and "Baby Blue" ending, and the "St. Stephen-> NFA-> Midnight Hour" might just sound better as a pure AUD.

Decide for yourself.

I'll second that. And,I learned that "matrices" is not a female matrix but the plural.

Here's one of my favorite Matrices:

The Matrix Club 10/08/68. A Very Nice Dark Star Jam on this one.

I think you could quite possibly find some links of interest on this page. It's not my blog, but it's one of the best out there for links right now.

For what it's worth, the plural of "matrix" is "matrices". I guess it doesn't matter anyway, but I thought I'd mention it.

Regardless, that's a good question to ponder this morning. Hmmm....

Looks like somebody doubled up on his morning red pill.....

The Matrices are a system, wlg3. That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? The Dave Matthews Band, Phish, Nickelback, Milli Vanilli, John Mayer. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it.

Back of the floor in the first few rows off the risers, dead center. FULL-ON Wall of Sound effect.

http://archive.org/details/gd1989-10-25.125645.mtx.dusborne.flac16
Between rows 5 – 10 dead center on the floor with Weir’s spit. a little close for total comfort.

http://archive.org/details/gd1978-05-14.124932.mtx.dusborne.flac16
First five rows on the floor dead center. Umbrella or bandana needed for the searing saliva.

http://archive.org/details/gd1971-04-17.mtx.tobin.107384.flac16
Suspended about 5 feet above the heads of the audience on the lip of the stage dead-center. Like standing on stage.

http://archive.org/details/gd1979-12-05.mtx.seamons.112235.flac16
Lowest level of the balcony dead-center perfectly even with the meat of the sound system. The second set is where it’s at, Garcia takes extended solos on almost every song.

http://archive.org/details/gd1981-04-25.sbd.gems.103640.flac16
Sitting in a chair on the lip of the stage in front of the band, dead center. This is definitely a matrix, not a pure soundboard.

http://archive.org/details/gd1977-03-19.mtx.hansokolow.96856.flac16
20 rows back dead-center on the floor at Winterland. Be there now!

http://archive.org/details/gd1973-06-22.mtx.seamons.92375.sbeok.flac16
At the sound board controls in the drippy gooey center of the Wall of Sound with a quiet and respectful (and enthusiastic!) Canadian crowd.

http://archive.org/details/gd1972-12-11.121029.mtx.dusborne.flac16
From the center balcony of Winterland. An imperfect document due to some loss of the soundboard, but what is there is very, very special. Home team on the home turf.

http://archive.org/details/gd1970-09-19.mtx.chappell.SB14.31510.sbeok.flac16
Probably the best matrix from 1970. So many soundboards were tragically lost of that, my favorite year of GD music.

http://archive.org/details/gd1990-03-16.mtx.hansokolow.96549.flac16
This is exactly what it sounded like in the taper section that night.

I love me some matrices and I based these choices on what I think (please forgive the arrogance! :)is superior musicianship coupled with outstanding three-dimensional sonic fidelity. I believe these (and probably dozens of others!) might all deliver the promise of what a matrix was supposed to be when the idea was first floated around. Special consideration was given here to those mixes that sound particularly fantastic with headphones and have that “you are there” or “the mouth of the beast” or “standing in a shaft of light” that was part and parcel of the sound system of the band we love so much. That is, when you were lucky enough to be in the sweet spot! Please enjoy, and feedback is much appreciated! Thanks so much to the tapers, the techs, the matrix wizards, the fans and Jehovah’s favorite choir, of course. God Bless the Grateful Dead. Note: Best enjoyed with head phones!

This list is truly fantastic. Its full of makes-your-week goodness. Definitely a few entries in my golden necronomicon of grateful dead grateness. Would mind me sharing it with the folks over at r/gratefuldead ? I don't know if you're a redditor, but i think the deadheads over there should see this.

@BornEasment: Certainly! Please do. I am not an redditor but would like to hear more. I am also not aware of r/gratefuldead. Please tell me more backchannel. Thank you!

Again, I think these are best listened to with headphones. Some recordings are good for the car, others for a home stereo system, etc. These are meant for innervision excursions through earbuds, earphones or headphones. Happy listening :)

Reddit.com/r/gratefuldead is a subreddit (that is, a forum specifically dedicated to a topic on the general forum website reddit.com) with around 7500 subscribers. Its a nice mix... kids who discovered the dead through the festy scene or furthur and old timers who saw the dead in their heydey. I'll start a thread dedicated to matrices and share your advice and recs over there. Drop by! Signing up is easy and (if I say so myself) reddit is one of the coolest places on the internet.

One of my all time sources. The banter and clarity of the recording can't be beat in my book. It just plain makes the whole show more enjoyable - AND, you can really crank it up without any distortion.

Great work Jubal. I keep this one in the ride at all times.

I've got to go with dusborne's recent addition:

http://archive.org/details/gd1977-05-07.124619.mtx.dusborne.flac16

There are many other candidates, but that is the top one I've listened to recently.

Outstanding to say the least.
